Investors hope BMO, CIBC and TD will also commit to disclosing key climate metric<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

TORONTO\/COPENHAGEN. March 7, 2025. <\/span>The Bank of Nova Scotia (TSX:BNS)<\/span><\/b> has committed to disclosing a key metric for measuring a financial institution\u2019s ability to deal with our new climate reality.<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In its <\/span>proxy statement released Friday<\/span><\/a>, Scotiabank announced it will disclose its <\/span>Energy Finance Ratio<\/span><\/b> by June 1, 2026.\u202f<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFor investors looking to understand climate financing by these influential institutions \u2014 not to mention navigating the new landscape of greenwashing regulations in Canada \u2014 nothing can replace a dollar-to-dollar comparison of a bank\u2019s core financing of the energy sector,\u201d said <\/span>Amanda Carr<\/span><\/b>, Associate Director, Climate Advocacy at SHARE.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After more than a year of investor engagement with Scotiabank, this decision was ultimately prompted by a shareholder proposal filed by a coalition of international investors led by <\/span>SHARE<\/span><\/b><\/a>, the Shareholder Association for Research and Education, and including Denmark\u2019s largest pension fund, <\/span>PFA Pension forsikringsaktieselskab<\/span><\/b><\/a>,<\/span> and <\/span>IBVM Foundation of Canada Inc<\/span><\/b><\/a>.<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The ratio, which compares a bank\u2019s investment in low-carbon and high-carbon energy sources, is a key indicator for investors to track how a bank is doing in reducing exposure to fossil fuels and harnessing the opportunities of the energy transition.<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

By committing to disclosing the ratio, Scotiabank joins several of North America\u2019s biggest financial institutions \u2014 including <\/span>Royal Bank of Canada (TSX:RY)<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>JPMorgan Chase and Co. (NYSE: JPM)<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>Citigroup Inc. (NYSE:C) <\/span><\/b>\u2014<\/span> in providing investors with much-needed insight.\u202f<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Carr added that investors are focused on maintaining strong investor support for the Canadian banking sector as a whole, and said that while Scotiabank\u2019s commitment is encouraging, it also highlights the lack of progress by its peers <\/span>Bank of Montreal (TSX:BMO)<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>CIBC (TSX:CM)<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>Toronto-Dominion (TSX:TD)<\/span><\/b>.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBMO, CIBC and TD are intimately familiar with the Energy Finance Ratio, as investors have been asking after it for over a year. Today, their main peers and competitors here in Canada have taken a step ahead of them on reporting this crucial metric,\u201d said Carr.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs the banking industry moves toward a consensus on the need to report this crucial metric, financial institutions that continue to drag their feet risk being left even further behind in seizing opportunities in the energy transition,\u201d said Carr.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
