{"id":3860,"date":"2018-12-14T22:11:01","date_gmt":"2018-12-14T22:11:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/share.ca\/sisters-of-mercy-help-push-western\/"},"modified":"2022-02-18T22:57:17","modified_gmt":"2022-02-18T22:57:17","slug":"sisters-of-mercy-help-push-western","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/share.ca\/blog\/sisters-of-mercy-help-push-western\/","title":{"rendered":"Sisters of Mercy help push Canadian mining giant to abandon operations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The Catholic Register: <\/em>After years of lobbying by a small community of Catholic sisters from eastern Canada, the world\u2019s largest producer of potash is abandoning mining operations in territory south of Morocco.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cIt\u2019s not our place as Canadians to go in and tell other countries how to live or what to do,\u201d said Sisters of Mercy of Newfoundland superior Sr. Elizabeth Davis. \u201cIt certainly is our place as Canadians \u2014 if we are living or working or present in other countries \u2014 to act with justice and to act ethically.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sistersofmercy.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Sisters of Mercy<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;is a congregation of about 75 women which ministers in Canada and in Peru, with a focus on alleviating injustice and serving the poor and oppressed, especially women.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a bit of a myth of this little religious community from Newfoundland and Labrador trying to stand up to two giant multinational corporations,\u201d said Davis. \u201cBut once we became members of SHARE we were no longer a little religious community.
